Bowie Bar in Old Montreal

457 Sainte-Hélène has no sign outside. No velvet rope, no neon, no sandwich board. What it has is a door, and on the other side of it, a room that smells like oud and cold champagne, lit the way a good secret should be lit.

Bowie is a cocktail bar and supper club hidden inside Old Montreal's most deliberately understated address. The concept is borrowed from the members' clubs of 80s London and Paris: caviar service without ceremony, fresh oysters at the bar, Japanese-forward small plates, and a cocktail list that requires a second read. Why Bowie Feels Like a Better Night Out

Most bars in Old Montreal are competing for the same tourist foot traffic. Bowie is doing something else. The room seats a limited number of guests by reservation only, there's no ambient television, no table-to-table noise bleed, and the kitchen closes at 11 PM, on purpose.

What's left when you strip all that out is a room that functions the way a night out is supposed to. The conversation stays at the table. The drinks arrive with intention. The playlist, live some nights, curated always, runs at a volume you can talk over without leaning in.

The dress code exists for the same reason. Bowie upholds it at the door so the room stays consistent on the other side of it.

Made for Better Nights Out

The room works for a lot of different occasions. What stays constant is the standard it holds across all of them.

  • The low light does most of the work. The Bowie's Lychee, vodka, lychee liqueur, elderflower, nigori sake — does the rest. Order the oysters. The chef dresses them differently most nights, so ask.

  • Bowie's table layout handles groups without losing the intimacy. Reserve the seats, share the small plates family-style, and let the cocktail rounds come. The kitchen is open until 11 PM. No one has to rush the first order.

  • A birthday here hits differently than a booth at a regular bar. Caviar service is on the menu: 30g or 50g of Osetra, served with blini and sour cream. Champagne by the bottle from a list that starts at Veuve and moves up from there. For private bookings, reach out directly at reservations@lebowie.com.

Explore the Bowie Bar

Every item on the menu at Bowie was chosen for the room, not for the receipt average. That's a meaningful distinction.

  • The list splits into House Classics and Signatures. The Red Velvet pairs reposado tequila with pandan and red wine: fragrant, warming, nothing like what you expected when you ordered it. The Nightporter finishes dark: Zacapa Solera 23, Genmaicha, cognac, ruby port. It's the last drink of the night, and it knows it.

Martinis get their own section. The Duke's runs Belvedere, saffron, dry vermouth, Yuzushu, and smoked Maldon salt. The Vesper is Roku gin, Belvedere, Lillet Blanc. Non-drinkers have real options: the Negronino and Garden Fizz are full cocktail builds at 0%.

  • Osetra caviar, blini, sour cream. Available in 30g ($150) or 50g ($250). The chicken nuggets and caviar pairing: six nuggets with 10g of Osetra, costs $75 and is exactly as good as it sounds. Order it once, and it becomes a tradition.

  • Bowie programs live music as part of the atmosphere. Not announced with a marquee, not ticketed; just there when it's there.

Plan Your Visit

A few details worth knowing before you arrive. Bowie runs on reservations and a standard the door team holds without exception.

Hours and Reservations

Wednesday: 7:00 PM – 12:00 AM

Thursday to Saturday: 7:00 PM – 2:00 AM

Reservations are required for entry. Book at lebowie.com/en/reserve, call 514.360.9290, email reservations@lebowie.com, or submit your inquiry here. Note that reservations are quoted before tax and gratuity, and tables arriving more than 15 minutes late may be forfeited or face delays.

Best Time to Go

Earlier seatings are quieter: better for conversation, easier on the ears. Thursday through Saturday after 10 PM is when the room fully opens up. The playlist runs longer, the crowd thins down to people who planned to stay.

Parking and Access

Bowie is at 457 Sainte-Hélène, Old Montreal. Street parking exists in the neighbourhood, with paid lots nearby. The closest metro is Square-Victoria–OACI. Rideshare drops off directly on Sainte-Hélène.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Yes. Bowie requires tasteful, sophisticated attire. Baseball caps, hoodies, sweatpants, and graphic tees are not permitted. The door team reserves the right to refuse entry to guests who aren't dressed appropriately. This is held consistently, not selectively.

  • Walk-ins depend on availability, which is limited most nights. Reservations are essential for guaranteed entry. If you're planning a specific evening, book ahead.

  • Guests must be 25 or older. This is enforced at the door without exception.

  • It's genuinely one of the better options in the city for a birthday that feels like an occasion. Caviar service, champagne by the bottle, a room that holds the energy of a celebration without becoming a party venue.
