Cocktail Bar in Old Montreal at Bowie

The cocktail list at Bowie is twelve pages deep and built like a bar program from a city that takes drinking seriously. Each recipe has a name, a flavour profile written in three words, and a reason to exist beyond looking good on a menu. That level of intention is rare in Old Montreal.

Bowie sits on Sainte-Hélène inside a reservation-only supper club with a dress code and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to slow down after the second round. The velvet is dark. The lights stay low. The cocktails are the point.

Why Bowie Stands Out for Cocktails

Plenty of Montreal bars have a cocktail menu. Fewer have one with the Nightporter on it.

That's a Zacapa Solera 23 rum, Genmaicha tea, cognac, and ruby port. It's dark, herbaceous, spirit-forward. The kind of drink a bartender makes when they're not trying to impress anyone, just trying to make something worth finishing slowly.

The full program covers House Classics, Signatures, Martinis, Old Fashioneds, and a Champagne list that starts at Drappier and ends at Krug. Non-drinkers have four purpose-built mocktails, not afterthoughts. The whole thing reads like it was written by someone who actually likes drinking, not just serving it.

The Cocktail Program at Bowie

Every section of the menu at Bowie has its own character. Here's how it breaks down.

  • The Signatures are where the bartenders show their thinking. Diana's opens with brown butter vodka, Champagne, and white peach. The Rango Punch goes Roku Gin, mango, toasted rice, and coconut whey: tropical and nutty, built around texture as much as flavour. The Maverick is mezcal and ancho pepper, smoky and entirely committed to its own point of view.

    Signatures: $19–$23

  • The Classics are where Bowie's palate shows most clearly. The Hot Honey Tommy's Margarita runs Hornitos Reposado, habanero honey, and Szechuan pepper: heat that builds, not burns. The Solway Cosmo uses Aupale Vodka, sour cherry, vanilla, and cherry blossom. It's recognisable and completely unlike what you'd expect from the name.

    House Classics: $18–$20

  • Five Martinis on the list, each one a distinct direction. The Duke's runs Belvedere, saffron, dry vermouth, Yuzushu, and smoked Maldon salt. The Dirty swaps in Bombay London Dry, Castelvetrano olive brine, and koji for something savoury and serious. The Tomato Martini: gin or vodka, tomato water, plum vinegar, black pepper, is the bar's most committed curveball.

The Vesper (Roku Gin, Belvedere, Lillet Blanc) and the Espresso (Aupale Vodka, espresso liqueur) are there for those who already know what they want.

    Martinis: $20–$26

  • Three options, three different spirits. The Canadian uses Canadian Whisky with Demerara and Angostura; clean and familiar. The Japanese is Suntory Toki with hinoki and lemon essence, quietly the most interesting of the three. The Oaxacan splits Patrón Reposado and Del Maguey Puebla Mezcal with agave and mole bitters.

    Old Fashioneds: $20–$26

Find the Right Cocktail Night at Bowie

The menu is long enough that it helps to know where to start. These are the natural entry points.

  • For a first visit, the Signatures are the clearest window into what Bowie actually does. Order Diana's or the Red Velvet: reposado tequila, grapefruit, Lillet Blanc, pandan, and red wine, and you'll understand the program faster than reading the whole menu. Both are built to be memorable on first sip.

Martinis get their own section. The Duke's runs Belvedere, saffron, dry vermouth, Yuzushu, and smoked Maldon salt. The Vesper is Roku gin, Belvedere, Lillet Blanc. Non-drinkers have real options: the Negronino and Garden Fizz are full cocktail builds at 0%.

  • The Martini and Old Fashioned sections are where Bowie earns trust from guests who already know what a well-made classic tastes like. The Duke's and the Japanese Old Fashioned are the two that regulars tend to come back for. Order either one and stay with it through the evening.

  • The Tomato Martini and the Maverick are for tables that want something to talk about. Both are polarising in the best way. The Nightporter belongs at the end of the night, ordered last, after everything else has been decided.
